I love it how ( I imagine) it tells a story of his life at first painting things that are interesting then at the end painting his wife and things he loves and finally the last 3 paintings his most looked on memories or at least that's how I saw it

Master of light. No question. The inclusion of a nude beauty is a bit of an easy gimmick, but he knew how to paint them. And who could argue with his natural gift? The sad thing is, nobody paints like this any more.

Possibly one of the best of the Russian Old Master portrait painters, renowned for capturing the character of the sitters, especially female subjects, moreso than all those landscapes that are here displayed. He was renowned in his day and even did a portrait of Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the wealthy inventor and businessman who was so ashamed of accumulating his wealth from 'explosives' that were killing people in war that he created the awards that bear his name.

His figure studies are very good; even though the models are 'posed', they all adopt a very 'naturalistic' pose which is convincing! The artist belongs to the 'old school' of draughtsmanship and working with a stick of graphite to note down all the movements of the figure!

That guy was an awesome painter that's the kind of pain in I like people places heavy day life the ones I don't like is a bunch of college running together and being called abstract but the way he Blended all the colors NSC series are unbelievable it makes you wonder if they still look like that

This painting used to be on exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Doesn't seem to be there anymore. My guess is it may have been sold to cover the costs of AGO s revamp
